If you've ever spent a fiesta weekend glued to a card table with your cousins, or waited out a typhoon afternoon with a deck of cards and a bag of chichirya, chances are you've played Tongits. It's been part of Filipino daily life for decades — louder than Pusoy, faster than most, and honestly more dramatic than any telenovela.
Tongits is a 3-player rummy-style card game using a standard 52-card deck. The goal is simple: get rid of all your cards before your opponents do, either by laying down sets and runs or by calling a draw and having the lowest remaining card count. But simple goals rarely mean simple gameplay — a single round can swing wildly depending on what you pick from the pile, what your opponent discards, and how well you read the table.
NuStar 1 brings this experience online without stripping away what makes it feel authentic. The interface is clean and fast, the matchmaking pairs you with real players across the Philippines, and the rules follow the version most Filipinos grew up with. No dumbed-down shortcuts, no awkward foreign rulebook adaptation — just Tongits, the way it's supposed to be played.
From Iloilo to Manila — NuStar 1 connects Filipino Tongits players nationwide.
Whether you're a first-time player or just want to confirm you've been playing it right all along, here's the full picture of how Tongits works on NuStar 1:
12 cards are dealt to each of the 3 players. The remaining cards form the central draw pile. The dealer gets one extra card (13 total) and discards first, which kicks off the round.
On your turn, draw either the top card from the central pile or the most recently discarded card. Then discard one card face-up. The round keeps cycling until someone wins or the draw pile runs out.
You can lay down valid card combinations — called melds — at any time during your turn. Sets are three or four cards of the same rank. Runs are three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. Laid-down cards are visible on the table and reduce your hand count.
Once a meld is on the table — yours or an opponent's — you can burn (add) matching cards onto it. This is key to reducing your hand count quickly and is one of the more tactical moves in the game.
If you manage to discard your very last card after laying down all your other cards as melds, you call Tongits — an automatic win that pays out at a higher rate. This is the cleanest way to win the round.
At any time during your turn, you can call a draw. All remaining hand cards are counted — Aces are 1, number cards face value, face cards 10. Lowest count wins the round. If any opponent challenges the draw and has a lower count, you lose instead.
If the central pile runs out of cards before anyone wins, the round ends automatically with a card-count comparison. Whoever holds the fewest points in unmelded cards takes the pot.
Card values matter most when a draw is called. Lower is better — you want as few points as possible still in hand.
| Card | Point Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 1 point | Lowest single card value |
| 2 through 9 | Face value | 2 = 2 pts, 7 = 7 pts, etc. |
| 10 | 10 points | — |
| Jack (J) | 10 points | — |
| Queen (Q) | 10 points | — |
| King (K) | 10 points | Highest individual card value |
Cards that are successfully melded or burned onto the table are removed from your point count. Unmelded high cards — especially face cards — are what you want to clear from your hand as fast as possible.
Tongits rewards players who pay attention to more than just their own hand. Here's how better players think:
What your opponents discard tells you what they don't need — and sometimes what they're actively avoiding. If someone keeps throwing out Clubs, they're probably not building a Club run. Adjust your own decisions accordingly.
Once your melds are on the table, opponents can burn cards onto them — reducing their own count. If you're confident about a draw win, sometimes it's smarter to hold your melds in hand a bit longer so you don't give opponents free card dumps.
Kings, Queens, and Jacks are worth 10 points each. If they're not part of a meld you're building, get rid of them in the early turns. Keeping them in hand and losing a close draw is painful — and avoidable.
The draw is powerful but risky. Call it only when you're confident your count is lower than both opponents. If you see an opponent burning cards aggressively, their count is dropping fast — don't wait too long.
If an opponent calls a draw and you're sitting on a hand count of 5 or less, challenge it. Even if you lose the challenge occasionally, the discipline of challenging when justified prevents opponents from calling draws too casually.
Even on NuStar 1's ₱10 tables, running several sessions in a row without a break leads to careless play. Set a session limit and walk away when it's reached — discipline outside the game matters as much as skill inside it.

There's something about Tongits that makes it feel more alive than other card games. Maybe it's the three-player dynamic — you always have two opponents to track, and alliances can shift within a single draw. Maybe it's the mix of patience and aggression that the game demands. Or maybe it's just that every Filipino who plays it has a story: the time they called Tongits on a hand nobody saw coming, or the round they lost because a cousin burned one too many cards onto their meld at the worst possible moment.
NuStar 1 understands that Tongits is more than a game mechanic. It carries memory and identity, and that's worth preserving in the online format. That's why the NuStar 1 Tongits experience is deliberately simple — no unnecessary complexity, no gimmicky side bets bolted onto the core game. Just Tongits, done right, with real pesos and real players.
